Mizzis Horrocks’ class of seven year olds is about to perform their nativity play at Flint Street Junior School for the proud mums and dads – and the occasional social worker. And then the stick insect escapes…

Tim Firth wrote the TV film, The Flint Street Nativity, inspired by his experience as a five year old, denied the part of Joseph in his class Nativity play. This meant that he missed the chance of holding the hand of the girl playing Mary, who he fancied, but who loved his best friend! Now adapted for the stage with the addition of well known carols (though not always with the well known lyrics), this hilarious, and often touching, play “exposes the snake-pit of paediatric power- politics” in the staging of an infant class Nativity.
