Further to the Prime Minister’s recent announcement relating to the easing of the Covid-19 lockdown in certain areas of work, leisure and public life, neither professional nor amateur theatres were given any specific indication as to when they might reopen. Consequently, Beckenham Theatre will remain closed for the foreseeable future or at least until the Government announces that it is safe for us to start performances again.
As we have been unable reunite the cast of The Heiress to perform in the autumn, we had hoped instead to be able to reopen in September with our production of Dawn King’s Foxfinder, originally scheduled for this July. However, to do this, we would need to audition the play in June and start rehearsals in August. It’s now clearly not going to be possible to do this so the trustees have now taken the decision to postpone Foxfinder which, along with The Heiress plus The Unexpected Guest and An Inspector Calls, two plays from the 2020 season we hadn’t previously announced, we will now try and reschedule into our 2021 season instead.
This means that the theatre won’t now reopen to the public until the October half-term at the earliest when we still hope to present a joint Children’s and Youth Theatre production, as we are unable to perform this May. To do this, our aim is to start rehearsing again in September when the schools will hopefully all be back and functioning normally. This will be followed by our pantomime, which this year is Panto Pandemonium. Both productions will be directed by Louise Garraway. Auditions for the pantomime will also be rescheduled from July to September. At this stage, everything is obviously subject to change, so please keep an eye on our website and on social media for updated announcements about both the children’s show and the pantomime.
In the meantime, Bromley Theatre Guild’s planned Fringe Fest, which was to have taken place at Hayes Village Hall on Saturday, 27th June, has also been postponed and moved to Saturday, 12th September. BTC was planning to be involved in this – and still is – so we will keep you updated as to whether it is going to be able to go ahead as well.
As ever, please stay safe and well and we hope to see you all again at Beckenham Theatre soon.
